Grants of $500 and grants ranging between $1,000 and $10,000 to Lake County, Indiana schools, nonprofits, and agencies to support youth philanthropy and community engagement projects involving youth. The purpose of funding is to inspire students to make a difference in their local communities. Funding is intended to support philanthropists and civic leaders of the next generation and provide youth with an opportunity to have their voices heard in order to make meaningful change in their communities.

There are two funding opportunities which are described below along with the application submission requirements.

Youth Civic Engagement Grants (Grants of $1,000-$10,000)
This grant should meet two or more of the following objectives:
-Develop Civic Leadership Skills. To provide youth (6-12 grade) with the leadership skills and knowledge (civic, population health, environmental, social) they need to effectively work with cross-sector community coalitions and municipal governments to alleviate significant problems in their communities.
-Guide Youth Civic Leadership. Programs to provide guidance and support to youth to explore civic engagement opportunities in their communities, such as: volunteering with community-based nonprofits and service on youth advisory boards connected to municipal government, cross-sector coalitions, and school boards.
-Develop Action Plans: To empower youth participants to work with their community to develop and implement a project that utilizes their strengths and tangibly improves their community.
-Involve youth directly in government issues, programs, processes, or services.
-Incorporate community-service opportunities that help young people learn about civic involvement or explore public policy issues.
-Encourage young people to value democracy and exercise both rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

Youth in Philanthropy Service Learning Grants (Ten $500 awards available)
Legacy Foundation’s Youth in Philanthropy Service Learning Grants offer youth the opportunity to implement a hands-on service project in Lake County. Service projects can be completed within the classroom or outside of school by students with adult supervision.

-Teach youth the importance of philanthropy
-Provide education regarding a local challenge, social issue, or current event
-Develop social consciousness in youth
-Inspire and empower youth to make a difference in their community

The following are reviewed to determine the strength of the request and/or the potential fit for the particular funding source:
-Capacity of Applicant Organization
-Impact of Proposed Project
-Investment of Funds
-Partnership and collaborations

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

501(c)(3) grantees must be in compliance with all state and federal guidelines and adhere to best practices for non-profit organizations.

Examples of applicant organizations include, but are not limited to:
-Educational institutions (including public, private, and charter schools)
-Faith-based organizations
-Community-based nonprofits
-Municipal/county youth departments
-Youth clubs and student councils
-Church youth groups (for non-denominational community-based activities)
